Austria 2023! Everything You Need To Know...

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

This weekend, we delve into the captivating realm of the Austrian Grand Prix, a spectacular event that combines high-speed competition with the stunning backdrop of the Austrian Alps. The Austrian Grand Prix is a must-watch for motorsport enthusiasts worldwide, as the Red Bull Ring has become synonymous with thrilling racing, remarkable displays of skill, and unforgettable moments that etch themselves into the annals of motorsport history

The Austrian GP will also be the second sprint race of the season, the first being back in April at the Baku GP.

Here is a reminder of the new sprint format:

  • Friday will see 1 free practice session and qualifying for Sunday's GP.

  • Saturday will see the sprint shootout (qualifying session for the sprint race) and the sprint race.

  • Sunday will see the GP as usual.

The sprint shootout is 30 minutes long, divided into 3 sections (like quali). Q1 is 12 minutes, and drivers must drive with a medium tyre. The slowest 5 cars are then eliminated. Q2 is 10 minutes long, and drivers again must drive with a medium trye. The slowest 5 cars are eliminated. Finally, Q3 is 8 minutes long, and drivers must drive with a soft tyre.

About The Track:

  • The first time a grand prix was held here was in 1970.

  • The circuit has 3 DRS zones. The first is between Turn 10 and Turn 1. The second is between Turn 2 and Turn 3. The third is between Turn 9 and 10. The circuit also has a speed trap which is just before Turn 4.

  • The race will have 71 laps of the 4.318km track.

  • The lap record was set by Carlos Sainz in 2020 at 1:05.619.

  • Despite its relatively short distance compared to other circuits on the Formula 1 calendar, the track's undulating nature, challenging corners, and elevation changes offer an exhilarating and unpredictable racing experience.

  • The Red Bull Ring has witnessed its fair share of record-breaking moments in Formula 1 history. In 2019, during the Austrian Grand Prix, the legendary British driver Lewis Hamilton achieved his 80th career victory, surpassing the previous record set by the iconic Michael Schumacher.

  • The Red Bull Ring holds a special place in the hearts of both drivers and fans, as it is the home circuit of the Red Bull Racing team. The passionate atmosphere and unwavering support from the ardent Austrian fans create an electric ambiance that further fuels the competitive spirit of the event, setting the stage for unforgettable battles and dramatic moments.
